The Omicron variant continues to gain ground in the U.S.: The average number of new infections reported per day over the past week now exceeds the peak of the violent Delta wave in the summer. While this figure was around 160,000 at the beginning of September, an average of 175,000 new infections per day was recently reported. In the USA, the omicron variant is dominant. In many places, records are being broken with regard to the number of new infections reported daily.

Numerous flights were cancelled over Christmas because airlines lacked staff. However, the number of people who have contracted Covid-19 and need hospital treatment is still significantly lower than in the summer. However, the situation could worsen – millions of people in the U.S. are not vaccinated.

The vaccination campaign got off to a good start, but then stalled. So far, just under 62 percent of the country’s roughly 330 million people have been vaccinated twice. Fewer than a third of them have also received a booster vaccination. In the U.S., the booster is scheduled six months after the second vaccination.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden, in his first Christmas message, praised the way U.S. citizens have handled the Corona pandemic. He praised “the tremendous courage, character, resilience and determination of all of you who heal, comfort, teach, protect and serve the country in ways large and small.” “Time and again, you show how precious our differences are and how infinitely great our commonalities are,” Biden and his wife, Jill, said in their joint message Saturday.
